About Me
Welcome. I'm Stephanie Millea. I am a fully qualified and experienced psychotherapist based in Blarney, Co Cork.
I completed my core professional training as a Psychotherapist in 2010 at Regents University in London. While in London I worked for a number of years as Clinical Administrator for a Psychoanalytic Couple's Therapy Service. I was a counsellor with Turning Point Drug and Alcohol outreach services and with SANE the mental health charity. From London I moved with my family to The Hague, Netherlands where I worked in private practice for a number of years and undertook a Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice through the Minster Centre in London before finally moving home to Ireland in 2023.

My time living abroad has brought me into contact with a very diverse range of people and experiences, both personally and professionally. It has given me a great appreciation for the huge variety of perspectives we humans can have on life from Ethnicity, Religion, Gender, Sexuality, Economic Status, Culture, Family Background and more. It is our diversity which enriches us but can also lead us to feel alienated and misunderstood. My hope is to help you, as my client, to feel understood and accepted whatever your background or identity and I look forward to accompanying you on your therapy journey.

I am fully accredited with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their strict code of ethics.

Why Therapy?
There are many reasons why someone may look for Counselling or Psychotherapy.

Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, Loneliness, Family Issues, Relationship Difficulties, Stress, Trauma, Issues around Sexuality or Gender and Low Self-Esteem are just some of the life challenges for which you might need to seek support.
You may have encountered a significant stressful or distressing experience which you want help in processing. You may have a sense of unease or dissatisfaction with the direction you feel your life is taking. Bereavement, separation or other major life transitions may leave you feeling anxious or depressed. Or you may wish for an opportunity to further your self-development in a safe and supportive environment.
Whatever the reason, embarking on therapy can often feel like a step into the unknown. As your therapist I understand how challenging that may feel but I will be there beside you each step of the way on what promises be a fulfilling and life enriching journey of self-knowledge and healing.

My Approach
My approach is Integrative, in that I am informed by a variety of therapeutic principles including the Humanistic, Existential and Psychodynamic models, with a particular interest in exploring how our early attachments shape our adult relationships. In life, we can often find that the same difficult feelings or situations seem to arise again and again. Through therapy we can learn together to identify these patterns and gain insight into where and how they originated. This is the first step to taking back control and learning how to overcome these difficulties in the future. On the other hand, we may experience a traumatic situation or seemingly intractable problem which we find difficult to move past. Processing these experiences in therapy can give us the tools to move forward in new and transformative ways.
Our sessions together will be collaborative rather than directive and I strive to provide a space which is non-judgemental, empathic and confidential.
It is my fundamental belief that, given the right circumstances, we all have the ability to heal ourselves and to reach our true potential.

Session information

I am based in Blarney, just15 minutes outside of Cork City.
I offer a free 30 minute initial consultation via zoom. The consultation is an opportunity for you to get a feel for how I work and also to help assess whether this is the right fit of therapy for you. Regular sessions are held weekly and last for 50 minutes. My therapy is not time-limited and can be short-term - a number of weeks, or long-term - a number of months or more in duration. While I do feel it is generally preferable to hold sessions in person, it may also be possible to hold sessions online if appropriate to your therapeutic needs.
